I am the girl who only ever wore lipstick, or anything beyond chapstick, for pictures or special occasions. I didn’t want to wear lip stick every day. It was a hassle and a pain to keep on my lips and off everything else. It was also a pain to have to check it every so often to make sure it didn’t need re-applying, which it usually did. I didn’t like having to wear lipstick for pictures and fancy occasions. Had it smeared? Was it half worn off already? Is one side put on wider than the other side? Do I look like a demented clown?
And then, Posh introduced Vial and I turned into a lip color fiend. I have all the colors they’ve ever released. They announced a new one Monday. Did I say, “I’ve got plenty of colors, I’ll let that one slide.” I did not! I said, “I need to gather up a group order and get one of those! I need a Vial tin to keep in my backpack anyway!”
Me, who never ever ever wore lip color now wears it pretty much every day of the week. Every. Day. And I even wear things like Dark Reds and Bright Pinks. WHO IS THIS PERSON?! What is this madness? Sarah, the queen of lip balm in the pocket (formerly chapstick in the pocket till Posh lip balm happened), wearing actual lip color at least 5 out of 7 days of the week. It’s insanity, I tell you.
There are reasons I wear it, of course. Not just because it’s Posh. Reason 1: I don’t have to worry about it. I put it on and forget about it. It doesn’t smear, it doesn’t transfer (unless I eat something super oily and forget to blot the oil off). It stays on all day and I don’t even have to think about it except to look in the bathroom mirror and think, “You look mahvelous!” Reason 2: It makes my lips feel good. Other lip colors, stains, glosses, lip sticks, etc make my lips feel dry and crackly and even itchy sometimes. Vial is dry, but it’s not an obnoxious dry. It’s soft and velvety. Reason 3: I feel a little (lot) sassier with some lip color on. Put me in You Sleigh Me red or Get Some pink and I’m liable to do all kinds of crazy brave things (for me).
Did you know there are studies that show women feel more confident with lip color on? They have. I don’t know who “they” are exactly that do these studies, but they’ve done studies. Maybe it’s our equivalent of war paint. The Celts had their blue woad, the Native Americans had paints made with ochre and iron oxide. Us modern day girls have lip colors.
A friend told me about one day when she was taking her little girl to school. Her daughter was upset and nervous about something. On a whim, my friend grabbed the lip gloss in the console, handed it to her daughter to put some on, and told her to rock the gloss. No, it wasn’t anything extra special or magical - it’d just give her a little extra oomph to get through her hard day. It worked. She got out of the car with her lip gloss on, her head a little higher, and her confidence boosted.
Is lip color necessary for more confidence? No, of course it’s not. But it does help. How you dress and look affects how you feel. I do feel more confident when I go out with my little bit of makeup on and clothes that look nice than when I go out with no makeup and old, ratty clothes. We can help each other feel more confident, too. Tell somebody how pretty they look, even if they ARE wearing just an old sweatshirt and jeans. Smile, meet somebody’s eye. Greet them with a firm handshake and a truly meant, “how are you?” Notice people, listen when they talk. Build one another up with kindness.
